In summer and early autumn, it is common in South Tyrol to have sunny mornings followed by short showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or early evening. This happens because the sun heats the valley floor and mountain slopes during the day. Warm, moist air rises along the slopes, cools at higher altitude, and forms cumulus clouds. If enough moisture and instability are present, these clouds can quickly develop into local rain showers or thunderstorms. They are often brief, but they can be intense in the mountains.
