Meditation-Based Interventions for Software Developers: A Systematic Literature Review on Well-being and Performance
Software developers frequently face high-pressure environments and tight deadlines, which may lead to stress, burnout, and decreased job performance. To address these challenges, meditation-based interventions, particularly those based on mindfulness, have gained attention for their potential to enhance employees’ well-being and performance. In this article, we present the results of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the effects of meditation-based interventions on software developers’ well-being and performance. After searching in the main databases for Software Engineering (SE) articles and then applied backward and forward snowballing, we identified 15 peer-reviewed articles published from 2012 to 2025. The findings of our SLR suggest that meditation-based practices are beneficial to software developers, yet the current evidence is still far from being conclusive. The analysis also reveals several research gaps, from which we derive directions for future research and opportunities for integrating meditation-based interventions into SE practice.
