Operationalizing Sustainability through Non-Functional Requirements: A Domain-Oriented Model for Biomedical Software
Biomedical software depends on non-functional requirements (NFRs) that shape safety, equity, and continuity of care. To examine how sustainability is treated within NFRs, we conducted a PRISMA-ScR scoping review (2015–2025) across Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. From 472 records, 347 were screened and 20 met inclusion. Taken together, these studies show multi-pillar ambitions but limited operational depth: metrics are sparse and no biomedical-specific model is available. In response, this paper introduces an innovative domain-oriented model translating sustainability principles into verifiable non-functional requirements for biomedical software. That organizes NFRs across Individual, Social, and Economic dimensions while acknowledging technical and environmental interactions. The model offers a concise taxonomy, verifiable acceptance criteria, and agile integration with backlog labels, Definition of Ready/Done checks, and acceptance tests, so trade-offs (e.g., privacy vs. availability) become explicit and traceable. We outline implications and next steps for piloting in healthcare settings, where measurable sustainability practices remain largely uncharted.
