Leveling Up: Experiences and Evidence-driven Upgrades to a Game Coding Camp for Autistic High School Students
This program is tentative and subject to change.
Teamwork and communication skills are important to have for software development positions. For neurotypical students, their coursework includes activities to help improve their teamwork and communication skills. However, autistic students often struggle with learning how to work as a team and how to communicate with others due to their struggles with learning social cues and lack of opportunities to practice their teamwork skills. In this experience report, we discuss our experiences running an online summer camp for 23 autistic high school students to teach them game development, communication, and teamwork over the course of 3 weeks. We explore previous camps in this space, their lessons learned, and discuss how they have affected the camp described in this paper. We also detail our experiences running this camp, and provide our lessons learned and recommendations for educators and researchers seeking to work with autistic high school students in a similar way.
