EXEMPLIFY-SEE: A Structured Approach and Portal for Example-Based Learning in Software Engineering Education
Software Engineering (SE) education plays a central role in preparing professionals who can apply concepts in realistic contexts by bridging theory and practice. Example-Based Learning (EBL) has emerged as a promising methodology, offering benefits such as improved comprehension, practical application of concepts, and the development of skills aligned with industry demands. However, previous studies highlight barriers that limit its adoption, including the effort required to design and adapt examples, the difficulty of producing materials with appropriate complexity, and the lack of structured and adaptable pedagogical support for educators. This paper introduces EXEMPLIFY-SEE, an approach implemented in a web portal that integrates customizable workflows with a repository of examples to guide educators step-by-step in designing lesson plans. Unlike prior initiatives that primarily provide repositories or isolated tools, EXEMPLIFY-SEE explicitly supports structured planning while enabling adaptation to different teaching contexts. The approach was evaluated in an exploratory study with twelve educators through questionnaires and interviews. Results indicate that educators perceived EXEMPLIFY-SEE as useful, easy to adopt, and effective in supporting EBL implementation.
