ICSE 2026
Sun 12 - Sat 18 April 2026 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Sustainable software engineering is receiving increasing attention due to the growing environmental, social, and economic impacts of software systems. However, limited research has explored how sustainability is perceived and addressed by software engineering practitioners in industry. In particular, there is a lack of understanding of practitioners’ interpretations of sustainability in software and its development, the methods and tools they employ, and their perceptions of limitations in assessing sustainability within software engineering processes. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 32 practitioners with diverse roles and expertise, primarily based in Sweden and Canada. This study presents preliminary results to provide insights into industrial perspectives on software sustainability.
