Behave 2026: The 2nd International Workshop on Multi-Disciplinary Strategies for Greening Software Engineering
The ICT community has been tackling the rising environmental impacts of devices and software with approaches ranging from measuring these impacts to minimizing them. In contrast, humans are often forgotten in the energy-efficiency equation, and in particular in software systems. For instance, end users are increasingly interacting with smart devices and objects, and in particular with the software running and piloting them. Focusing on software system optimizations without integrating users in the energy reduction strategies might lead to rebound effects (i.e., the Jevons paradox).
The Behave workshop aims to foster and build a multi-disciplinary community around green software. We aim to explore, study and propose strategies to reduce the energy consumption of software systems through a multi-disciplinary approach. We also aim to build bridges between the different communities working on improving the energy efficiency of the technological foundation (hardware and software), those working around design factors (HCI, UI/UX design), those working on social aspects (behavioral studies, sociological impacts), and those working on individuals (environmental psychology).
We invite submissions of presentations to either:
- Present the major challenges or a scientific vision around green software in a multi-disciplinary approach.
- Present new multi-disciplinary research results and current approaches.
We invite presentation submissions to tackle the challenges around this multi-disciplinary approach. For instance, but not limited to, addressing the following challenges:
- How can developers and interface designers build green software taking into consideration end users' usage?
- Which incentives could lead users to be more aware and to adopt energy-efficient behavior when using digital tools?
- How do we build seamless communication and interaction channels between the different technical and social disciplines concerned with reducing the energy consumption of ICT?
In addition, the Behave workshop seeks contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:
- The environmental and social impacts of software
- Pro-environmental behavior in software
- Impact of environmental knowledge on software use
- Designing software interactions for sustainable usage
- Socio-psychological interventions to induce behavioral changes in software
- The impact of users' profile on the adoption of green behavior in software use
- Identification of the socio-psychological barriers restraining user's adoption of green behavior in software use
- Autonomous approaches to manage software energy ecosystems
- Empirical green software engineering
- The role and impact of artificial intelligence in sustainable software human practices
