The 15th IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Software Engineering for Systems-of-Systems and Software Ecosystems (SESoS 2027) provides a forum for Software Engineering researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and experiences, analyze research and development challenges, discuss promising solutions, and propose inspiring visions for the future of systems-of-systems (SoS) and software ecosystems (SECO).

SoS have been studied for several years within Systems Engineering and remain a relevant research topic, given the ever-increasing complexity and scale of contemporary systems, as well as the impact these systems can have on various application domains. The trend of software evolution and the unprecedented reliance of the economy and society upon software-intensive systems have led many SoS to be fundamentally driven by software, i.e., being software-intensive as well. On the other hand, the characteristics that make SoS unique are the same ones that pose significant challenges to both Systems Engineering and Software Engineering. SECO is also an important research topic in Software Engineering because it addresses social and technical issues, as well as the technical aspects of software development. The novelty of SECO lies in considering the dynamic, uncontrolled interplay between internal and external actors and artifacts that help maintain a common technological platform. However, the lack of analytical models and real-world case studies hampers the consolidation of a body of knowledge on the topic.

Following the successful editions of SESoS in 2013-2026, WDES in 2017-2018, and the joint editions of SESoS/WDES in 2017-2021, this year’s workshop will focus on discussing the use of Software Engineering methods, practices, and tools to develop complex software-intensive systems towards paving the way for a more structured community effort on SoS and SECO. SESoS 2027 will be held on April 25, 2027, co-located with the 10th International Workshop on Software-intensive Business (IWSiB 2027).

Selected high-quality papers presented in SESoS 2027 will be invited to submit extended versions to the Special Issue on Automated Software Engineering for Systems-of-Systems, Software Ecosystems, and Software-Intensive Business of the Automated Software Engineering journal (IF 3.1 (2024), SJR Q2 (2025)).

SESoS 2027 focuses on the following (and related) topics related to systems-of-systems (SoS) and software ecosystems (SECO):

Submission Instructions

SESoS 2027 seeks two types of paper submissions:

• Research papers (up to 8 pages), describing original, substantial contributions in research or practice
• Short papers (up to 4 pages), including position papers and experience reports describing emerging results, lessons learned, open problems, or novel ideas and perspectives on research.

Page limits include the abstract, all figures, tables, and references. All submissions must conform to the IEEE conference proceedings template and do not need to be anonymous. LaTeX users must use \documentclass[10pt,conference]{IEEEtran} without including the compsoc or compsocconf options. Changes to spacing, font size, or other formatting that deviate from the instructions may result in desk rejection without further review.

By submitting to SESoS 2027, authors acknowledge that they conform to IEEE’s Authorship Policy, IEEE’s Submission Policy, and ACM’s Authorship Policy. This includes following these points related to the use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI):

• Generative AI tools and technologies, such as ChatGPT, may not be listed as authors of an ACM published Work. The use of generative AI tools and technologies to create content is permitted but must be fully disclosed in the Work. For example, the authors could include the following statement in the Acknowledgements section of the Work: “ChatGPT was utilized to generate sections of this Work, including text, tables, graphs, code, data, citations, etc.” If you are uncertain about the need to disclose the use of a particular tool, err on the side of caution, and include a disclosure in the acknowledgements section of the Work. • The use of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated text in an article shall be disclosed in the acknowledgements section of any paper submitted to an IEEE Conference or Periodical. The sections of the paper that use AI-generated text shall have a citation to the AI system used to generate the text. (IEEE)
• If you are using generative AI software tools to edit and improve the quality of your existing text in much the same way you would use a typing assistant like Grammarly to improve spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, engagement or to use a basic word processing system to correct spelling or grammar, it is not necessary to disclose such usage of these tools in your Work. Review and Publication Processes

All submitted papers should describe original work and not have been published or under review anywhere. At least three Program Committee members will evaluate papers for clarity, relevance, originality, and contribution.

Accepted papers will be published in IEEE Xplore. Publication of accepted papers will require at least one author to register for ICSE 2027 and present the paper in person during the workshop.

Journal Special Issue
