SWEBOK Summit 2027

The 3rd SWEBOK Summit will be an in-person workshop held on a single day between April 25 and May 1, 2027, in Dublin, Ireland.

The Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK Guide), published by the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE CS), reflects the current state of generally accepted, consensus-driven knowledge and skills derived from the interaction between software engineering (SE) theory and practice. There are numerous purposes for using the SWEBOK Guide, including guiding education and training, facilitating professional development, and standardizing practices.

This Summit is an industry- and practice-focused event, bringing together practitioners, researchers, and educators from the SE communities to collaborate, share experiences and challenges, and provide future research directions on the body of knowledge, skills, and competencies required for current and future SE professionals, as well as related professional training and certifications. The Summit also encourages the use of the SWEBOK Guide to address SE-specific challenges. Furthermore, the results of the Summit will provide valuable input to further the evolution of the SWEBOK Guide, as well as related programs and products, such as SE Certifications.

The 1st IEEE SWEBOK Summit and the 2nd SWEBOK Summit were successfully held as part of ICSE 2025 and 2026. The 1st and 2nd Summits covered a variety of topics, including the following: Introduction of SWEBOK Guide V4.0a, industry adoption and application, professional development and job, certification program, education and curriculum, standards and other related knowledge and skills frameworks, and future of SWEBOK (Guide). The 3rd Summit is expected to address a similar broad spectrum of issues in the software engineering body of knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as related professional training and certifications.

Call for Papers

The Summit will be a one-day workshop featuring selected presentations on SE bodies of knowledge, skills, competencies, certifications, and related topics. You are invited to participate and submit your presentation proposals to the Summit. In addition to selected presentations, the Summit will have keynotes, panels, and invited tutorials. The Summit’s areas of interest include (but are not limited to) the following topics:

• Practical experience using the SWEBOK Guide, skills, and competencies in SE
• Education and training related to the SWEBOK Guide, skills, and competencies in SE
• Certification and qualification programs in SE
• Research on bodies of knowledge, skills, and competencies in SE
• Discussions and challenges of bodies of knowledge, skills, and competencies in SE
• Future trends in SE to be potentially included in the next version of the SWEBOK Guide

Submission Instructions

The Summit invites submissions of a 1-page short talk summary, as well as papers (limited to five pages) that describe a single work addressing a topic relevant to the Summit. Submitted summaries and papers will be reviewed by a committee of renowned experts in the field and will be shortlisted. Authors of accepted talk summaries and papers are required to register and attend the Summit in person for oral presentation(s).

Papers will be included in the Summit proceedings; however, talk summaries will not be included. Submissions use the official “IEEE Conference Proceedings Formatting Template”, as can be obtained from the page: https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates .

• Paper: Limited to 5 pages, describing a single work addressing a topic relevant to the Summit, to be included in the proceedings
• Talk summary: Limited to 1 page, NOT included in the proceedings

Attendance and Registration

Authors of accepted talk summaries and papers are required to register and attend the Summit in person for oral presentation(s). Non-authors can also participate in the Summit by registering themselves via the ICSE’s registration site.
