SUBMISSION GUIDELINES / GUÍAS PARA EL DE ENVÍO DE TRABAJOS / DIRETRIZES PARA SUBMISSÃO
Authors are invited to submit high quality research papers describing significant, original and previously unpublished results in Software Engineering, in any of the official languages of CIbSE: English, Spanish and Portuguese.
The following article categories are welcome:
Technical papers (no more than 15 pages): papers describing innovative research in the topics of interest of the conference. Papers in this category should describe an original contribution to the topics and should carefully support claims of novelty with citations to relevant literature.
Technical papers are evaluated on the basis of originality, strength, relevance, significance of the contribution, level of validation, quality of presentation and comparison with related work. When an article builds on previous work by the author(s), the novelty of the new contribution should be clearly described with respect to the previous work. Technical papers should clearly discuss how the results were validated.
As in previous years, a set of the best papers presented at the conference will be selected for publication in a journal indexed in the Journal of Citation Reports (Science of Computer Programming Journal or similar). Additionally, the best paper will receive a certificate of recognition.
Emerging ideas papers (no more than 8 pages): papers describing new and unconventional approaches that depart from standard practice, on the topics of interest of the conference. They are intended to describe clear research ideas that are at an early stage of development.
Papers on emerging ideas will be evaluated primarily on their level of originality and potential impact on the field with respect to promoting innovative thinking. Therefore, gaps in the state of the art and the relevance, correctness and impact of the idea should be accurately described. While the idea being presented does not need to be fully validated, a presentation of preliminary results is expected to provide initial information on the feasibility and impact of the contribution.
Articles on applied R&D projects or contracts with companies (no more than 4 pages): these contributions must deal with R&D projects that are in progress at the time of submission. For these articles the following information should be included: summary, main objective, beneficiaries of the proposal, technologies used and results obtained (so far and expected).
Poster papers (no more than 2 pages): papers that describe an idea or initial state of a study, related to the topics of interest of the conference, and without the need to have obtained tangible results at the time of submission. The main objective is to enable conference participants to discuss these ideas with the authors and to contribute new insights to the work in progress. Accepted papers will be presented in poster format in a session during which interaction between authors and conference attendees will take place. In addition, the best poster will receive a certificate of recognition.

Natalia Juristo - Are we Getting Reliable Evidence? Methodology is Critical in Empirical Studies
Wednesday, May 14th, 2025
Empirical studies make it possible to generate evidence about software development identifying relationships between variables and thus improving understanding of it. Conducting each type of empirical study: experiments, observational studies (for instance MSR studies), case studies, etc. keeps up with a methodology (i.e. procedure).
Proper adherence to such methodology guarantees the reliability of results. Be aware of the importance of sticking to the methodology when running an empirical study is critical for advancing in the generation of evidence about software development. Methodological rigor in carrying out empirical studies is essential to obtain reliable findings. On reliable findings evidence can be built. Unreliable findings are useless or even misleading. SE community despises methodological rigor. Such attitude makes difficult to advance and guarantees keep on stumbling over the same stone.
During the talk I will discuss cases the methodological status of two types of empirical studies (experiments and observational studies), some empirical activities (data analysis and aggregation among others), and several empirical “domains” (as laboratory, MSR, or Deep neural networks).
Bio: Natalia Juristo is full professor of software engineering with the Computing School at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). She began her career as software engineer in the European Space Agency (Rome) and the European Center for Nuclear Research (Geneva). Back in 1992, she was postdoc visitor in the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (USA). Natalia held a Finland Distinguish Professorship at University of Oulu from January 2013 to June 2018. She was the Director of the UPM MSc in Software Engineering from 1992 to 2002 and the coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus European Master on SE (whith the participation of the University of Bolzano, the University of Kaiserslautern and the University of Blekinge) from 2007 to 2012.
She has been member of several journals Editorial Boards including IEEE Transactions on SE, the Journal of Empirial SE, Software Testing, Verification and Reliability and IEEE Software. Margaret-Anne Storey - AI and the Future of Software Development: Learning from Industry, Research, and Human-Centered Theories
Thursday, May 15th, 2025
The latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations are reshaping the developer experience—not only in how code is written but also in how developers comprehend complex systems, create innovative solutions, collaborate with peers, and engage in communities of practice. In this keynote, I will explore what we can learn from AI’s adoption in industry and early research while drawing on human and social theories to help shape AI’s role in software development.
By examining real-world experience reports and early research, I will discuss how emerging trends reveal both exciting possibilities and new challenges. AI has the potential to accelerate problem-solving, streamline coding, and expand access to knowledge, yet it also raises concerns about over-reliance, shifts in creativity, and changes in team dynamics. Beyond these immediate impacts, we must take a deeper look—leveraging insights from cognitive science, human-computer interaction, and social learning theories to understand AI’s broader implications.
By integrating perspectives from industry practice, academic research, and human-centered theories, this talk will offer a critical lens on AI’s evolving role in software engineering. More importantly, it will challenge us—not just to consider where AI is taking us, but to actively shape its design in ways that enhance human intelligence, creativity, and collaboration in software development.
Bio: Margaret-Anne Storey is a Professor of Computer Science and a Canada Research Chair in Human and Social Aspects of Software Engineering. Together with her students and collaborators, she seeks to understand how software tools, communication media, data visualizations, and social theories can be leveraged to improve how software engineers and knowledge workers explore, understand, analyze and share complex information and knowledge. She has published widely on these topics and collaborates extensively with high-tech companies and non-profit organizations to ensure real-world applicability of her research contributions and tools. Dr. Storey currently advises companies that include Microsoft and DX on strategies to understand and improve developer productivity and developer experience.

In an increasingly connected world, the convergence between cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) opens up new challenges in what has come to be called the Cloud-IoT continuum, an ecosystem that enables seamless and continuous integration between cloud computing services and Internet of Things (IoT) devices located at the other end of the network.
Software engineering must respond to the development of systems in this environment, enabling their design and maintenance in a way that guarantees interoperability between heterogeneous devices, dynamic deployment of components at different levels (edge, fog and cloud), security and privacy in a distributed ecosystem and energy efficiency. This talk will highlight the efforts being made in this area to facilitate the implementation of scalable, resident architectures capable of making decisions in real time, analysing emerging trends and the opportunities that the Cloud-IoT continuum offers for the development of smarter, more connected and efficient systems.
