Doctoral SymposiumEASE 2027

The EASE 2027 Doctoral Symposium aims to provide a helpful and stimulating forum for Ph.D. students to present and discuss their research proposals, ongoing research, and early research results. Experienced members of the empirical software engineering community will serve as advisors and provide constructive feedback on the research presented.

The symposium welcomes submissions from current doctoral students, preferably those who have already identified their dissertation topic and obtained some initial results. Doctoral students at earlier stages of their research are also welcome to participate.

Call for Papers

The EASE 2027 Doctoral Symposium provides Ph.D. students with an opportunity to present their research, exchange ideas, and receive constructive feedback from experienced researchers in the empirical software engineering community.

The symposium welcomes current Ph.D. students at different stages of their research, particularly those who have defined their dissertation topic and obtained some initial results. Students at earlier stages are also encouraged to participate.

Scope

The scope of the Doctoral Symposium is the same as that of the main conference. Submissions should therefore address research within the overall scope and themes related to evaluation and assessment in software engineering.

Submission

The submitted research proposal should be single-authored and is limited to 6 pages, including references. We suggest the following outline to maintain a uniform reporting style and facilitate constructive feedback from the symposium advisors:

• Title and Abstract (up to 250 words)
• Author and Advisor Information (The submission should include the doctoral student’s name and affiliation. The advisor’s name, email address, and affiliation should be provided in a footnote associated with the doctoral student’s name)
• Motivation, problem statement rationale, and contributions of the research.
• Relevant related work.
• Key Research Questions/Challenges to be addressed.
• Work Plan explaining how the challenges will be addressed:
  • Research approach, empirical study design, and implementation;
  • Definition of the most important metrics and measures (e.g., following the Goal-Question-Metric approach);
  • Data collection approaches;
  • Data analysis methods and techniques;
  • Validity threats and their mitigation strategies;
  • Summary of the current status of the research (including a very brief outline of the early results) and planned next steps.

The proposal should provide sufficient information for the symposium advisors and other participants to understand the research problem, assess the proposed research approach, and provide meaningful feedback.

The formatting rules of the main EASE 2027 conference proceedings also apply to Doctoral Symposium papers.

Publication

Depending on the review outcome, submissions will be accepted either as short papers published in the conference proceedings or as posters to be presented during the conference.

Accepted papers will be published as open access in the ACM International Conference Proceedings Series (ICPS), subject to ACM’s applicable publication policies and conditions. Authors should consult the ACM guidance on the ICPS publishing model and ACM Open program to determine whether an article processing charge (APC) may apply.

Research Integrity and Responsible Use of AI

Authors remain fully responsible for the content, integrity, accuracy, and originality of their submissions and for any research or research artifacts produced with the assistance of AI tools. Participation

Authors of accepted submissions are expected to register for EASE 2027 and participate in the Doctoral Symposium. Participants will present their research and actively engage in discussions with symposium advisors and other doctoral students.
