Research PapersISEC 2027

Innovations in Software Engineering Conference (ISEC) 2027 invites the submission of both research and experience papers that describe novel and unpublished results in all aspects of Software Engineering (SE). Papers describing theoretical or empirical research, new techniques, case studies or experience papers that identify lessons learned, or tools are welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

The papers will be evaluated based on the relevance to software engineering, the novelty of the contributions (how they advance the state of the art or provide useful insights), the thoroughness of their evaluation (or the soundness of their theoretical contribution), and the clarity of their writing.

ISEC 2027 will have two submission deadlines. Papers submitted to the first round will have four outcomes (i) Accept (ii) Minor revision, (iii) Major revision, and (iv) Reject.

The papers that are marked for major or minor revision will have a chance to submit a revised version in the second round and have it accepted. The papers submitted to the second round, can be fresh papers or papers marked for revision in the first round. The papers submitted to the second round will not have the option of minor/major revision; i.e., will be either Accepted or Rejected.

ISEC 2027 submissions can be in one of the three categories: (1) Regular papers, (2) Short papers, (3) Ideas and Experiences

Regular papers: Regular papers should not exceed 10 pages for the main text (including figures, appendix, etc. but excluding references) in the standard ACM format. LaTeX users should use the sigconf option, as well as the review (to produce line numbers for easy reference by the reviewers) and anonymous (omitting author names) options. Submissions that make a research contribution are expected to describe novel, high-quality research, with thorough evaluation (if applicable), in one or more aspects of software engineering. Experience papers must emphasize potential impact including how to overcome practical challenges, and lessons learned.

Short papers: should not exceed 5 pages, including figures, appendix, and references, in the standard ACM format. Submissions in this category may contain, for example, new interesting ideas that may not have been evaluated extensively. However, the ideas must be robust and of technical merit, with convincing evidence that they can be taken towards completion.

Ideas and Experience papers: should not exceed 2 pages (all inclusive) in the standard ACM format. Submissions in this category may contain, for example, industrial experiences, best practices, interesting yet unexplored ideas, etc. However, the paper should convince that it has high utility, and wide applicability. Accepted entries in this section will be invited to present their ideas at the conference, but will not be part of the ISEC 2027 proceedings,

ISEC 2027 will use a double-blind peer review process. The authors must anonymise the submissions, i.e., (i) authors’ names must be omitted from the submission and (ii) authors' prior work should be referred to in the third person.

Important guidelines:

Submissions must also comply with the ACM plagiarism policy and procedures. Specifically, a submission must not have been published elsewhere and must not be under review elsewhere while under review for ISEC.

IMPORTANT #1: Starting 2026, all articles published by ACM will be made Open Access. This is greatly beneficial to the advancement of computer science and leads to increased usage and citation of research.

Most authors will be covered by ACM OPEN agreements by that point and will not have to pay Article Processing Charges (APC). Check if your institution participates in ACM OPEN.

Authors not covered by ACM OPEN agreements may have to pay APC; however, ACM is offering several automated and discretionary APC Waivers and Discounts.

IMPORTANT #2: Submissions must follow the latest “ACM Policy on Authorship” (with associated FAQ, which includes a policy regarding the use of generative AI tools and technologies, such as ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude.

If a submission is accepted, at least one author is required to register for the conference and present the paper in person. In exceptional circumstances (e.g., when none of the authors are based in India), provisions for remote presentation may be made. All accepted papers must have at least one non-student registration for the paper to be published in ISEC 2027.

Artifact Evaluation

Authors of accepted papers will be invited to submit supplementary materials to the Artifact Evaluation process. This process is conducted by an independent committee responsible for determining how effectively the submitted artifacts support the claims and results presented in the paper. At the time of submission, authors must include an artifact availability statement describing the artifact’s expected functionality and its connection to the paper’s findings. While participation in artifact submission is optional, it is strongly encouraged. Importantly, the outcome of the artifact evaluation will not affect the final acceptance decision of the paper.

Papers that successfully pass the Artifact Evaluation process will be awarded a badge displayed on the published paper and will include the artifact availability statement, which does not count toward the page limit. Authors are also encouraged to make their artifacts publicly accessible once the proceedings are published, for example by uploading them as “source materials” in the ACM Digital Library.

Best Paper Award:

One of the accepted papers in the regular papers category may be awarded as the best paper. The criteria for the best paper include significance, novelty, clarity, broad applicability, and clarity of in-person presentation. The award will be decided by the program committee and the steering committee and will be announced at the conference.

Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library, and indexed by DBLP. A special issue with the Journal of Systems and Software is being planned. If this goes ahead, a selected set of high quality submissions will be invited to submit an extended version of their paper.
