The International Workshop on Resilience for Safe, Secure and Responsible Systems (RSSR 2026)

As software systems become increasingly autonomous, decentralized, and integrated with Generative AI, the definition of correctness has fundamentally shifted. It is no longer adequate for a system to be merely functional; it must be safe, secure, responsible, and resilient—capable of maintaining acceptable service levels in the face of adversarial attacks, unexpected environmental shifts, and internal failures.. This ability should be quantifiable to enable a comparison across different systems, or an analysis of one system across different scenarios of disruptions and adversarial attacks.

Today’s systems with Generative AI face a unique paradox: a system can be technically safe from crashes and accurate, yet fail to be norm-compliant regarding regulations or ethical standards. To be truly responsible, systems must possess the intelligence to respond to these socio-technical shifts in real-time.

The RSSR 2026 workshop brings together researchers and practitioners to explore automated methods for engineering systems that are not only safe and secure but also norm-aware and responsible under conditions of deep uncertainty and disruption. The Automated Software Engineering (ASE) community is uniquely positioned to address the Resilience Gap. While the AI community often prioritizes model performance and accuracy, this workshop focuses on the rigor of the development process. By automating the injection of safety, security, and norms into the AI-enabled software systems development cycle, we can move from reactive patching to proactive resilience.

RSSR 2026 aims to unite software engineers, machine learning experts, cybersecurity researchers, and regulators to collaboratively establish a foundation for SE techniques tailored specifically for resilient and responsible AI-based systems. Traditional SE has made outstanding progress in addressing “hard constraints”. However, Responsibility and Norm-awareness involve “soft constraints”—societal values, legal requirements, and ethical guidelines—that are context-dependent and constantly evolving. The workshop focuses on:

  • Automated Monitoring: Detecting norm and safety violations in real-time within decentralized environments.

  • Autonomic Self-Healing: Synthesizing self-adaptive mechanisms that allow systems to recover from disruptions or ethical drifts without compromising operational integrity.

  • Adversarial Robustness: Engineering defenses against cyber-attacks specifically designed to compromise a system’s safety logic or ethical boundaries.

Call for Papers

RESEARCH AREAS

We invite contributions that leverage Automated Software Engineering techniques—including formal methods, search-based SE, probabilistic programming, and ML-for-SE—to address the following pillars, though topics are not limited to:

  1. Foundations of Resilience in SE and RE Defining and modeling resilience metrics for safety-critical, security-sensitive systems and responsible systems Automated elicitation of resilience requirements for Responsible AI. Frameworks for balancing trade-offs between system performance, safety, security, and ethical requirements.

  2. Automated Norm-Awareness under Uncertainty Techniques for ensuring systems adhere to societal, legal, and organizational norms, even when operating in unpredictable environments.

  3. Resilient & Self-Adaptive Architectures Engineering systems that survive and recover from disruptions. Self-adaptive reconfiguration strategies to maintain security and safety during active cyber-attacks. Automated synthesis of recovery protocols for systems operating under high uncertainty. Architectural patterns for “graceful degradation” when responsible AI constraints are at risk of being breached.

  4. Human-in-the-loop Resilience Tools and methodologies that empower developers and operators to manage the complexity of resilient systems. Human-centric automation: balancing machine autonomy with human oversight to maintain systemic resilience.

SUBMISSION PROCESS

RSSR welcomes research papers, experience papers, and tool presentations; nevertheless, papers describing novel research contributions and innovative applications are of particular interest. Contributions can be:

  1. Regular Papers (up to 8 pages, including references): This category includes original research contributions, innovative solutions to challenging problems, and practical experiences (e.g., industrial applications, empirical studies, and case studies) at the intersection of resilience engineering, adversarial robustness, and norm-aware software systems for safe, secure, and responsible AI.

  2. Short papers (up to 4 pages, including references): This category includes tool demonstrations, position papers, emerging ideas, and visionary contributions addressing challenges and opportunities in resilient, safe, secure, and responsible AI-enabled systems. Tool demonstration papers should clearly describe the proposed tool, its relevance to the workshop themes, and any enhancements made compared to previously published work. Authors of demonstration papers are encouraged to make their tools available to reviewers.

All papers must: be written in English; be in PDF format and conform, at time of submission, to the IEEE Conference Proceedings Formatting Guidelines (title in 24pt font and full text in 10pt type, LaTeX users must use \documentclass[10pt,conference]{IEEEtran} without including the compsoc or compsocconf option); not exceed 4 pages (short papers) or 8 pages (regular papers), including references.

Submissions are required to report on original, unpublished work and should not be submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Each submitted paper will undergo a formal peer review process by at least 3 Program Committee members. Accepted papers will be included in the ASE’s conference proceedings. If a submission is accepted, at least one author of the paper is required to register for RRSR 2026 and present the paper. Paper submission is done via HotCRP: https://rssr26.hotcrp.com/
