Call for Proposals

SEAMS 2026 is incorporating for the first time in its program a Community Debate track with a call for proposals. Through this initiative, community members are invited to propose and chair a debate on a timely and thought-provoking topic of broad interest to the SEAMS community. Through this initiative, community debate proposals should include:

  • A thought-provoking statement on a topic of broad interest to the community. The statement should allow members of the community to take a position in favour or against it.
  • A motivation for the statement with supporting arguments.
  • A brief bio of the proposer.

Proposals should not exceed 500 words and will be selected based on the timeliness of the topic, the suitability of the statement for organizing a debate, and the qualifications of the proposer.

Submissions

Community debate proposals should be submitted via the HotCRP submission site.

Evaluation

Proposals will be reviewed by the General Chair and Program Chairs of SEAMS 2026 with the support of the SEAMS Steering Committee. Only one proposal will be accepted.

The evaluation will be based on the following criteria:

  • Novelty: Is the proposal sufficiently significant and controversial? To what extent is the topic exciting for the SEAMS community?
  • Potential for Debate: Is the idea sufficiently thought-provoking? Will it solicit differing perspectives from the SEAMS community? Can the topic raise controversial opinions in the audience? Is the proposer qualified to organize the debate?

Responsibility of the Community Debate Chair

The proposer of the accepted community debate becomes the Community Debate Chair (CD) for SEAMS 2026 and will be responsible for:

  • Organizing a small review committee (four people).
  • Preparing the Call for Community Debate Positions, which should include:
  • An explicit position in favour or against the statement.
  • Arguments for the position, supported by references where needed.
  • A short bio of the submitter.

Accepted position papers should not exceed two pages and will be published in the SEAMS 2026 proceedings.

  • Organizing and coordinating the Community Debate session at SEAMS 2026.
  • Disseminating relevant information via the SEAMS website.

Important Dates

  • Proposal for Community Debate Submission: November 06, 2025
  • Notification of Acceptance for Community Debate: November 13, 2025
  • Proposal for Community Debate Position Submission: December 11, 2025
  • Notification of Acceptance of Community Debate Position: January 12, 2026
  • Camera-ready of Community Debate Position Submission: January 26, 2026

Note: All deadlines are 23:59h AoE (Anywhere on Earth).

Call for Position Papers

As self-adaptive systems evolve toward greater decision-making autonomy, their capacity to influence human lives expands beyond technical functionality into the moral domain. Across self-adaptive systems domains, researchers emphasize that increasing autonomy brings new moral responsibilities, calling for systematic and responsible approaches to embedding ethics in system design. The question may no longer be merely how to design systems that adapt effectively, but how to ensure that these adaptations remain ethically defensible. This raises fundamental questions for the SEAMS community:

  • How ethical can an ethics-aware controller truly be?
  • Who (or what) decides what is “right”?
  • How do we design, verify, and trust systems whose moral reasoning is shaped by designers, data, or operational contexts?
  • Should SAS follow fixed moral doctrines, or dynamically negotiate ethical trade-offs?
  • Should AI play a role in shaping or interpreting ethical decisions at runtime? If so, how or how much?

This SEAMS Community Debate invites researchers, practitioners, and students to critically examine the crossroads of autonomy, uncertainty, adaptation, and ethics. We aim to explore whether trustworthy ethical reasoning is achievable within adaptive control loops, especially when humans and machines co-evolve.

Submissions

We solicit submissions of position papers that meet the following criteria:

  • An explicit position in favour or against the statement: How ethical can an ethics-aware controller be? Can we trust its decisions?
  • Arguments for the position, supported by references where needed.
  • A short bio of the submitter.

Authors of manuscripts that meet the above criteria are invited to submit an original 2-page position paper in the https://seams26positions.hotcrp.com/ submission system consisting of (1) paper title, (2) author(s), (3) abstract, (4) introduction, (5) explicit position and arguments for the position, (6) references and (7) a short bio of the submitter. Accepted position papers should not exceed two pages and will be published in the SEAMS 2026 proceedings. All submissions must be in PDF format and conform, at the time of submission, to the official “ACM Primary Article Template”, which can be obtained from the ACM Proceedings Template Page.

Evaluation and Presentation

Proposals must clearly adhere to the theme of the Community Debate. Given the nature of a community debate, our goal is to curate a balanced set of position papers clearly representing either “pro” or “con” perspectives supported by references where appropriate.

Submitters of accepted position papers will be invited to briefly present their ideas during the community debate session. Each presenter will be allocated three to five minutes of podium time to summarize the core argument of their position. This will be followed by an open debate with SEAMS attendees, where differing viewpoints, questions, and reflections will be encouraged.

Following the conference, the outcomes of the debate will be synthesized and disseminated through the appropriate SEAMS communication channels.

At least one author of each accepted position paper must register for the conference, and in-person presentation is required for participation in the debate.
