Experience and Challenges on Modeling and Simulation of Systems-of-Systems Software Architectures
Systems-of-Systems (SoS) software architectures are essentially challenging. SoS are composed of several constituent systems developed by different companies, complying with a high diversity of technologies and standards and linked by several different interoperability links. Arranging constituents to (i) form a feasible structure and (ii) accomplish complex behaviors is not a trivial task. In that sense, the adoption of simulation models can leverage Software Architecting for Systems-of-Systems (SASoS). Simulation models enable architects to predict, still at design-time, different architectural arrangements (coalitions) an SoS can assume at runtime as well as the feasibility of the behaviors delivered by each of the coalitions. While being a recognized practice in Systems Engineering, advances have been achieved in the last years to bring simulation models to SASoS practice. However, challenges still remain, such as (i) the use of simulation models to monitor and anticipate SoS behaviors at runtime, (ii) the use of simulation to predict, analyze, diagnose and measure SoS quality attributes, and (iii) precisely modeling SoS architectures to avoid failures that could lead to losses. This talk will provide the SESoS/WDES attendees with a tour over simulation model solutions for SASoS, particularly using DEVS formalism, besides presenting research opportunities that still remain.
