Rao is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science and is advised by Prof. Aleksandra Korolova. His current research involves devising audits of targeted ad delivery systems. Broadly, he aims to make data-driven decision making systems fair and transparent, both for their creators and users, while simultaneously providing rigorous privacy guarantees on the data used for making those decisions. He is also passionate about research in computer science education and pedagogy.
Previously, he was an applied scientist at Amazon working to protect customers and build seller trust by developing multi-modal (text and image) explainable models for automation of compliance operations. Rao was also a Computer Vision Intern on the Core Recognition team at Apple, helping design OCR (optical character recognition) solutions applied to handwritten text.
He graduated with a Masters from Carnegie Mellon University where his research involved understanding the privacy needs and attitudes of incidental home IoT device users.
