Dr. Huafeng Yu is a Senior Scientist at the USDOT Highly Automated Systems Safety Center of Excellence (HASS COE) specializing in automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics. Previously, he was the lead scientist of AI assurance and certification for Boeing Research & Technology. Dr. Yu’s expertise includes verification and validation, safety assurance, and certification of autonomous systems. While at Boeing, Dr. Yu was the principal investigator for the Federal Aviation Administration’s AI assurance project, NASA’s autonomy verification and validation roadmap project, NASA’s/Boeing’s autonomy verification and validation project, and Boeing’s AI verification and validation project; he was the assurance lead for the Boeing team in the DARPA Assured Autonomy program and the assurance lead for Boeing’s Detect And Avoid project. Prior to joining Boeing, he worked at TOYOTA, ALTRAN, INRIA, Gemplus (acquired by Thales), and Panasonic. Dr. Yu is currently a member of the AIAA Intelligent Systems Technical Committee, SAE G-34 Standard Committee on Artificial Intelligence in Aviation, SAE S-18A Autonomy Working Group, ANSI UASSC Working Group, IEEE Technical Committee on Verification of Autonomous Systems, and IEEE Technical Committee on Cyber-Physical Systems. He serves as associate editor for the journal IET Cyber-Physical Systems, and guest editor for the journals IEEE Transaction on Sustainable Computing, ACM Transactions on Cyber-Physical Systems, and SAE International Journal of Aerospace. Dr. Yu received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Lille, an M.S. in Computer Science from Université Grenoble Alpes, and a B.S. in Computer Science from Northwestern Polytechnical University.
