Name:Leopoldo Sarra
Bio:

I am currently Head of AI Research at Axiomatic AI, where I explore methods for developing verifiable and interpretable reasoning techniques for science and engineering. Previously, I was a Flatiron Research Fellow at the Flatiron Institute, where I worked on the Foundation Models for Science initiative and trained large-scale transformers for astrophysics. My research interests lie at the intersection of machine learning and science. I investigate how machine learning techniques can support scientific discovery. For example, I explore how an “artificial scientist” could automatically learn from observations, understand relevant concepts, build new physical models, and design new experiments, similar to how human scientists do. I received my Ph.D. in machine learning applications for physics from Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany, in association with the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light. I earned my B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics at Sapienza University in Rome, Italy, focusing on the statistical physics of spin glasses.
