Robert Karban is the CAE Software and Systems Environment lead and Technical Group Supervisor of the Software And Systems Solutions Engineering group in JPL’s Systems Engineering and Formulation Division.

He manages and coordinates the Systems Environment team to deliver an end-to-end integrated environment for systems engineering and analysis consisting of 30+ apps and services, supporting 600+ engineers, and 15+ flight projects with 15+ embedded roles. Robert coordinates and mentors the team’s product engineers working in those embedded roles on flight projects. He organizes training for the CAE users and vendor visits for lab wide presentations, and also supports external relationships and partnerships.

Robert follows-up and coordinates the technical side of 10+ vendors for managed services, contracts and license arrangements. Robert is internationally recognized as an industry leader in MBSE and MBE using his leadership role in the OpenMBEE community and as NASA representative at the OMG for SysML to align the different model based aspects. On the Thirty Meter Telescope project he contributed as systems engineer in building executable SysML models for operational concepts and behavior as well as working on its software architecture and design.

At the European Southern Observatory he routinely deployed, tested, and commissioned for more than 18 years control software and control systems of the world’s largest telescopes located in the Chilean Atacama desert at the Cerro Paranal Observatory and at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in New Mexico. He also led the High-Level Control and Architecture group, which provided competences in developing domain specific coordination and high-level distributed control software applications and systems by applying model based and model driven methodologies.

At the CERN (European Laboratory for Particle Physics) he developed embedded control software for the power supplies of the accelerator systems, and started his career at SIEMENS Medical Engineering Department with the development of test and system embedded software for the Siemens Medical Imaging system (SMI). He received his M.S. in Computer Science from the Technical University of Vienna/Austria.

Robert published 25+ papers at different conferences, received different awards inside and outside JPL, and gave 25+ invited presentations at different organizations.
