Recent reports indicate Open Source Software now dominates enterprise infrastructure across industries, 98% (Northbridge 2017), 93% (New Stack 2018), and 96% (Synopsys 2018). The popular press has also proclaimed, “Open Source Has Won” (Wired 2016), helping to drive significant growth in development, investment, and acquisition. With such success, many are seeking novel approaches to leverage open source development, projects, and communities in order to enhance existing internal practices, extend business opportunities, or generate new business models to differentiate their own projects and products. Others, motivated by social justice, seek to modify open source practices to align with their own principles in support of humanitarian efforts. This presentation will describe the current state of Open Source Software and communities, and the existential threats to the Open Source Software movement from well-meaning novices and nefarious actors, who dismiss the core tenets of open source, ignore community norms and expectations, to further their own agendas.
