STAF 2024
Mon 8 - Thu 11 July 2024 Enschede, Netherlands

A recent forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC) envisions that 41 billion Internet-of-Things (IoT) endpoints will be in use by 2025, representing great business opportunities. The next generation IoT systems need to perform distributed processing and coordinated behavior across IoT, edge and cloud infrastructures, manage the closed loop from sensing to actuation, and cope with vast heterogeneity, scalability and dynamicity of IoT systems and their environments. Smart IoT Systems have the potential to flourish innovations in many application domains. For instance, the typical components of a smart city include infrastructure, transportation, intelligent energy consumption, health-care, and technology. These ingredients are what make the cities smart, efficient and optimized respect to the citizen and administration needs. The Internet of Things is an emerging paradigms that can contribute to make smart cities efficient and responsive.

On the one hand, model-driven engineering (MDE) techniques can support the design, deployment, and operation of smart IoT systems. For instance, to manage abstractions in IoT systems definition and to provide means to automate some of the development and operation activities of IoT systems, e.g., domain specific modeling languages can provide a way to represent different aspects of systems leveraging a heterogeneous software and hardware IoT infrastructure and to generate part of the software to be deployed on it. On the other hand, the application of modeling techniques in the IoT poses new challenges for the MDE community. Due to its cross-domain nature, this topic has a high potential for synergies (i) within the MDE community – model evolution, models_@_run.time, model transformations, multi-paradigm modeling and model validation, for examples, and (ii) across the MDE and IoT communities. The International Workshop on Model-Driven Engineering for Smart IoT Systems is one of the most accurate venues to offer researchers a dedicated forum to discuss fundamental as well as applied research that attempts to exploit model-driven techniques in the IoT domain.

The key goals of the workshop are:

  1. foster work in its early stage on novel topics covering fundamental as well as applied research that attempts to apply model-driven techniques in the IoT domain,
  2. bring together researchers from the model-driven software development and IoT communities, as well as to promote discussions between theoreticians and practitioners, and
  3. discuss the transfer and/or applicability of research results from the MDE community to IoT industrial case studies.

Call for Papers

We are seeking contributions that reports research results or experiences on the application of MDE techniques to all aspects related to the development and operation of IoT systems. Since smart IoT systems typically operate in the midst of the unpredictable physical world, this also includes aspects related to the ability of these systems to continuously evolve and adapt to their changing environments whilst ensuring and increasing their trustworthiness, quality and user experience. The (non-holistic) list of topics of interest are as follows:

  • Runtime models and operation of smart IoT systems
  • Model-based deployment and orchestration of IoT Systems
  • Model-based testing for IoT
  • Multi-view modeling for IoT
  • Code generation for IoT
  • Simulation of physical systems and things
  • Modeling languages for IoT systems
  • Model-based analysis, verification, and validation techniques
  • Trustworthiness of smart IoT systems
  • Integration of IoT, Fog, and Cloud Computing spaces
  • Megamodeling for IoT systems (of systems)

Paper Submission

We solicit submissions of extended abstracts (not more than 2 pages including references that will be published as posters in the CEUR-WS proceedings). All submissions must be written in English, adhere to the CEUR Style single column formatting guidelines, and must be relevant to the workshop topics. All the accepted papers must be presented at the workshop. The accepted papers will be published in the CEUR-WS proceedings of the conference.
