Dr. Tanimoto did his Ph.D. dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Theodosios Pavlidis on the subject of hierarchical computation structures in image processing. After working in the field of algorithms and architectures for image processing, he transitioned into software technology for learners, with an NSF-funded project “Mathematics Experiences Through Image Processing.” Concurrent with these main threads, Dr. Tanimoto has contributed to visual languages for programming, features of interactive environments to promote learning, such as liveness in programming, and critical feedback for creativity, as well as methodologies for game design based on problem formulation techniques from classical artificial intelligence.
