This tutorial aims to offer practical experience in high-level visual modeling of business processes, discuss challenges, and highlight research opportunities in this young and growing field.

Business processes are modeled visually to comprehend them from the perspectives at architectural levels and of stakeholders at higher end of the organizations. Business process models are logical models of process architectures which are implemented via technologies, and Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) 2.0 is a standard specification language for high-level process modeling. The broader objective of this tutorial is to highlight challenges and research scope in young and growing fields related to business process modeling.

The former stage of the tutorial is based on practical hands-on to get acquainted with BPMN 2.0. It uses Camunda as a modeling tool to understand the concepts of processes such as collaboration, choreographies, interactions, public and private processes, participants, swimming pools and swim-lanes, activities, and types of tasks, roles, flows, initialization, instantiation, events, gateways, etc. The latter part of the tutorial addresses a few modeling challenges, issues, and research questions through examples. The tutorial is designed to cater to a wide-ranging audience, and doesn’t require any background knowledge.
