AccessiblePreview: Facilitating the Implementation and Visualization of Accessibility in Mobile Applications Developed with SwiftUI
This program is tentative and subject to change.
This study addresses the challenges of integrating accessibility into the development of mobile applications, particularly within the iOS ecosystem. Despite the availability of accessibility guidelines such as WCAG 2.2 and Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, developers face significant technical, organizational, and interpersonal barriers to implementing accessible interfaces. To reduce friction in the development process, we propose AccessiblePreview, a tool integrated into Xcode’s SwiftUI framework to facilitate the visualization and testing of accessibility features during development. By enabling developers to simulate scenarios such as low contrast, large touch targets, and reduced animations, the tool aims to improve adherence to accessibility standards and promote inclusive design practices. The proposed solution was tested with developers of varying experience levels, demonstrating its effectiveness in streamlining accessibility implementation while highlighting areas for improvement, particularly for novice developers. This work contributes to advancing accessibility in mobile application development by addressing existing gaps and fostering a culture of inclusive design.
