This conference presentation delves into the complex dynamics of balancing agility and rigour in large-scale aerospace projects. The crux of the matter is that these projects are increasingly demanding both efficiency and reliability, necessitating swift execution without compromising the robustness traditionally associated with such ventures. Our comprehensive analysis has shed light on the root causes of these challenges. One significant factor is the tendency for project teams to become more insular and compartmentalised as the project advances, which hampers effective inter-team communication. Additionally, the deep integration of certain tools into the development process can make it difficult to transition to emerging, more efficient tools, thereby impacting development efficiency. To address these issues, we have devised a novel methodology named Integrated Knowledge Centric Engineering (IKCE). This approach amalgamates the principles of JPL’s Integrated Model Centric Engineering (IMCE) with the tools and techniques of DevOps. The IKCE methodology is supported by our new Leonardo Digital Platform (LDP), a Digital Engineering platform specifically designed to facilitate typical DevOps functions along with other features intrinsic to IKCE. Our current implementation of the IKCE methodology takes the form of Workspaces within the LDP. These Workspaces serve as development environments that teams can utilise, with data stored in a standardised format. We have also initiated the development of some of the tools that will be used within these Workspaces. In conclusion, we outline our future plans to foster wider adoption of this innovative concept within the engineering teams at Leonardo, thereby driving forward the evolution of project management in the aerospace industry.
