We live in a world replete with complex system of systems that need to operate in a dynamic and uncertain environment thus necessitating continuous adaptation so as to deliver the stated goals which may also change over time. These systems, characterized by large size and non-linear interactions, are spread across spaces such as information-only, cyber-physical, societal, and biological. They raise several new concerns to be addressed for which current practice is found wanting. To overcome this limitation, we present a digital twin centric simulation-based approach and associated technology that builds further upon proven results from Modelling & simulation, AI, Control Theory and Software Engineering. We validate this approach with a representative sample use cases from real world and highlight open challenges that need to be overcome going forward.

Vinay is a TCS Fellow and Head of Software Systems Research at Tata Research Development Design Centre of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). His research interests include digital twins, learning native software, model-driven software engineering, AI in software engineering, and enterprise modeling. His work in model-driven software engineering has led to a toolset that has been used to deliver several large business-critical systems over the past 25 years. Much of this work has found way into OMG standards, three of which Vinay contributed to in a leadership role. An alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Vinay is a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering and also serves as Visiting Professor at Aston University Birmingham, Middlesex University London, and Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur.
