Walid Maalej is an award-winning software & requirements researcher, passionate mentor, and a world citizen. As Professor of Informatics at the University of Hamburg, he teaches software development to up to 700 students in a single room, using fun activities and pair-programming. His advanced software engineering courses address real challenges from industry and society by combining cutting-edge technology with a large portion of empiricism and communication skills.
His research interests include AI for Software Engineering, Software Engineering for AI, user involvement and feedback, as well as knowledge sharing & understanding in software ecosystems. His work has been cited thousands of times (e.g. by the US Government) and received a.o. multiple Distinguished Paper awards as well as three Most Influential Paper Awards.
Prof. Maalej is a public speaker, tech-transfer enthusiast and consultant. He has worked with and for multiple companies including Siemens, Tata Consultancy Services, Rohde und Schwarz, and Telekom. As head of informatics department, he successfully navigated the department through turbulent pandemic times including an exceptional budget cut.
