Sven Thielen is a research assistant at Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences since February, 2023, and graduated M.Sc. Media informatics at University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf in June, 2023.
Originally a trained IT specialist, he has a professional background in informatics, IT security, and audio engineering., and has developed a strong passion and dedication for the use of Free Software (FLOSS) and Arch Linux. He supports conducting and expanding courses on cyber security and digital forensics at the Cyber Campus NRW (CCNRW), and in addition is involved in research projects on cybercrime and further training of teachers (e.g. at vocational schools) via talks and workshops at annual Cisco Academy Days conducted by IT Bildungsnetz e.V.
Sven has been engaged in projects and associations (e.g. Digitalcourage) with the aim of fostering the use of FLOSS, digital souvereignty, and privacy. He is advocating alternatives to Big Tech and centralized services (e.g. Social Media)—such as Forgejo, Matrix, Nextcloud, and the Fediverse—and committed to raising awareness about IT security flaws and privacy infringements as part of his teaching duties.
Currently, he is looking for university supervision to pursue doctoral studies in the context of digital souvereignty, software architecture or software engineering, or a combination of these fields.
