Leicester
Some general information about Leicester, and things to do can be found here: https://www.visitleicester.info/
A few particular activities to highlight:
-
King Richard III Visitor Centre. Learn about King Richard III and the amazing story of the search for and discovery of his remains in a car park in August 2012, which made national news.
-
Leicester Museum & Art Gallery. A place of discovery with collections and displays spanning the natural and cultural world. General entry is free to all visitors. A family friendly day out, the galleries include Ancient Egypt, Dinosaurs, Wild Space, Leicester Stories Gallery, the Victorian Art Gallery, Arts & Crafts Gallery, Picasso Ceramics: The Attenborough Collection and Leicester’s internationally renowned German Expressionism collection. Formerly known as New Walk Museum.
-
Attenborough Arts Centre. 25 years ago, Attenborough Arts Centre was established by Richard Attenborough (brother of David Attenborough), a lifelong champion of arts and social justice who believed that art is for everyone. Today the centre stays true to his vision, by creating and curating a range of inspiring artistic programmes alongside opportunities to actively participate, focusing particularly on giving platforms to those who are often not heard or represented, enabling them to tell their stories.
-
Visit the University Botanic Garden.
-
If you fancy shopping, try the Highcross Leicester shopping mall or try Leicester Market (an outdoor market and covered food hall).
-
If you fancy the theatre, then try the Curve, or for a show try De Montfort Hall.

Beyond Leicester (aka Guildford)
Why not extend your stay with an evening of open air theatre directed by Steffen Zschaler (co-Chair of ECMFA’23)? Watch “Cyrano de Bergerac” with a picnic on the lawn outside a beautiful English manor house near Guildford. Shows are every night from Wednesday to Saturday, and there is also a matinee performance on Saturday.

Please get in touch with Steffen if you have any questions about the play or would like some advice on how to travel to Guildford before/after the conference.
