Rethinking RE Topic Mapping: Toward an Extensible Framework for Curriculum–Industry Comparison
Mapping Requirements Engineering (RE) topics to established frameworks and bodies of knowledge (BoKs) has been the focus of various initiatives over the past 15 years, including REBOK and REOntology. However, these BoKs and ontologies have proven insufficient to analyze RE curricula in higher education and compare them with observed RE practices, particularly in job-related contexts. In response, we developed a structured and extensible mapping scheme. The scheme was initially constructed through deductive coding based on established BoKs and certification standards and iteratively refined by analyzing 22 RE-related course descriptions. It was inductively extended to include related disciplines (e.g., project management, software engineering, business analysis) and specialized or emerging topics (e.g., AI4RE, agility, sustainability) that go beyond the core RE categories. A multilingual memo system was implemented to ensure consistent terminology mapping and to support AI-assisted coding validation. The scheme was applied to a sample of 11 job advertisements for RE-related roles to assess its broader applicability. While the mapping structure proved effective for analyzing educational and job-related texts, the exercise also highlighted open questions—particularly concerning addressing general competencies, domain-specific knowledge, and transferable skills commonly found in RE job profiles.
