QEX: Automated Testing Observability and QA Developer Experience Framework
Abstract—In organizations that embrace continuous integration and continuous delivery software development process, automated testing is commonly applied on a large scale. Automated Testing (AT) generates large volumes of data on a daily basis, and can be key to the success and speed of software development [1], [2]. While there are studies to measure the impact of AT on software development, there is still a lack of organizational frameworks or platforms in the industry capable of providing comprehensive high-level observability on testing activity across a large number of projects that is vital for managing the development and maintenance of mature test frameworks and is a crucial part of the QA Developer Experience [3]. In this paper, we present QEX, a model for integrating common testing data sources and obtaining observability on test development suitable for large-scale testing performed within enterprise contexts. We provide an open-source implementation of our model that is used at our company.
