Innovative teaching tactics for an exciting software testing
Although paramount for a safe digital society, software testing is perceived by students as a non-attractive activity when compared to design or coding . The adverse result is that motivated testers are difficult to find on the job market. The question is What can we, educators do to change this situation? At the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam we have been teaching a Software Testing course for computer science students for more than 15 years. Although the course started in a traditional way, in the last few years we deployed a series of innovative interventions that include bug-hunting gamification, accidents investigations and a hands-on experience with embedded software testing. In this talk, I will describe these out-of-the-box educational initiatives and I will reflect on our achievements, challenges and future work.
