The messages of code commits can contain useful information on why a developer has made a change. However, past work has not reported on the presence and structure of rationale in real-world code commit messages. This paper reports on a) our creation of a labelled dataset, and b) a selection of detailed analyses for the code commit messages for the Out-Of-Memory Killer component of the Linux kernel. We report our findings regarding rationale information, such as its presence, temporal evolution, and structure. For example, 98.9% of the commits in our dataset contain sentences that we have labelled as containing rationale information, and that experienced developers report rationale in about 60% of the sentences in their commits. We report on the challenges we faced and provide examples for our labelling.
