This paper investigates how software developers understand compiler error messages and proposes visual anno- tations to support their comprehension. The research addresses the limitations of current Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) in facilitating developers’ self-explanation processes. A user study with 28 software engineering students demonstrates that the proposed annotations improve developers’ ability to interpret error notifications, leading to more accurate mental models.
