Born, much to his surprise, in Dunfermline (Dùn Phàrlain) the ancient capital of Scotland; one of the most important ancient Scottish capitals until the time of James VI of Scotland (James I of England) and the Union of the Crowns in 1603. Incidentally, it is also the birthplace of Andrew Carnegie and the resting place of Robert the Bruce who was buried in Dunfermline Abbey in 1329 minus his heart which is buried in Melrose Abbey.
