Teaching Novices Programming and Important Applications in a Single Semester - Critical Factors from Zero to Portable GUI Programming in Four Hours

In the past 35 years employing systematically participative observation a lecture got created that allows for teaching novices programming from zero and empowering them to apply their knowledge to program e.g. MS Office and OpenOffice/LibreOffice, to create client-server socket programs and to create portable GUI programs, all in a single semester (four months, four contact hours per week). It may be noticeable that despite the teaching load of 8 ECTS (200 hours) there are no drop-outs among the participating business information students.

Workshop Content

This workshop introduces the developed pedagogical concept, the infrastructures that can be used, the syllabus and the parts of it that are key for the overall success of this lecture. There will be a few small nutshell examples presented with the intent to exemplify what can be achieved. This approach in the workshop should allow any attendee to analytically assess the overall concept, the building blocks and the applicability of the learning outcome for the students who start as novices at the beginning of the semester. At the end of lecture the novice students will be able to create programs that control Windows programs via OLE (object linking and embedding), apply curl for interacting with web resources, create portable client-server socket programs, become able to process XML and HTML5 text, and even create portable, complex GUIs exploiting the powerful JavaFX framework.

Workshops

As well-established tradition, the Conference on Software Engineering Education and Training (CSEE&T) is an academic conference providing a platform for software engineering educators as well as industrial trainers to communicate on a variety of topics and actual issues related to software engineering education, training, and professionalism. We invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the 36th International Conference on Software Engineering Education and Training (CSEE&T 2024).

The workshops allow groups of common interests to exchange experiences and new ideas, as well as to discuss viewpoints in a focused. We particularly invite workshop proposals that cover controversial viewpoints, emerging technology drivers or transformative ideas related to the conference theme “The Dawn of AI in Software Engineering Education”.

Workshops can be half-day or a full day events and will take place as part of the main conference (concrete workshop dates to be determined later).

Workshop Proposals (up to 2 pages)

The workshop proposal must not exceed two pages and should include the following by using the IEEE conference proceedings format (https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html):

  • Workshop title
  • Main contact for the workshop
  • Workshop organizing committee
  • Brief description of workshop topic and goals
  • Expected numbers of submissions and participants
  • Expected number of accepted papers
  • Draft workshop schedule including duration (full day or half day), format of sessions and discussions
  • Paper selection criteria and mechanisms
  • Plan to publish the proceedings
  • Special requirements regarding facilities, equipment, and materials if applicable
  • Information regarding previous instances of the workshop/similar workshops by the organizers (if any)

Submission Procedure

Workshop proposals must be submitted via mail to the workshop chair Jil Klünder (jil.kluender@inf.uni-hannover.de) no later than February 4, 2024. A dedicated committee reviews your proposal based on the following aspects:

  • Evaluation of the workshop’s potential to advance the state of software engineering education and training
  • Relevance to the conference topics
  • Potential for attracting a sufficient number of participants
  • Organizers’ ability to lead a successful workshop

Format and Review Procedures

A dedicated committee reviews your proposal based on the following aspects: * Evaluation of the workshop’s potential to advance the state of software engineering education and training * Relevance to the conference topics * Potential for attracting a sufficient number of participants * Organizers’ ability to lead a successful workshop

Acceptance and Publication

If a workshop proposal is accepted, the workshop organizing committee is responsible for:

  • Creating a web page and a call for papers for the workshop for publicity and communication. The call must make it clear that the workshop will be open to all participants of CSEE&T 2024.
  • Providing a brief description of the workshop for the conference web page and program.
  • Advertise the workshop
  • Establish a Program Committee
  • Ensuring a fair and transparent paper selection process, including proper handling of conflicts of interest
  • Notifying the authors of acceptance or rejection
  • Creating the workshop program
  • Publish the proceedings. Workshop papers will not be included in the CSEE&T 2024 conference proceedings. The workshop chairs have to choose a publication service, such as CEUR.org to publish accepted workshop papers.
  • Responding to requests by the CSEE&T 2024 organizing committee in due time

In case of questions, feel free to contact Jil via mail.

All attendees at a workshop, including the organizer for the workshop plus any attending assistants, must register as conference delegates before the camera-ready deadline. The workshop language will be English.
