ICSE 2021
Mon 17 May - Sat 5 June 2021

ICSE has formed partnerships with prestigious software engineering journals to incorporate journal-first papers into the ICSE program. Through this initiative, authors of journal-first papers accepted in the partnering journals will be invited to present their work at ICSE, thus providing an opportunity for the authors to engage directly with the community and offering the ICSE attendees an additional dimension to the research track program.

The journals that support the journal-first model as partners with ICSE are:

  • IEEE Transaction of Software Engineering (IEEE TSE),
  • ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (ACM TOSEM),
  • Empirical Software Engineering (EMSE).

Call for Contributions

Scope

A submission to the ICSE 2021 call for journal-first paper presentations must adhere to the following criteria:

  • The associated accepted journal paper was accepted to a journal from the list below no earlier than November 1st, 2019 and no later than November 1st, 2020:
    • IEEE Transaction of Software Engineering (IEEE TSE),
    • ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (ACM TOSEM),
    • Empirical Software Engineering (EMSE).
  • The paper is in the scope of the conference.
  • The paper reports completely new research results and/or presents novel contributions that significantly extend and were not previously reported in prior work.
  • The paper does not extend prior work solely with additional proofs or algorithms (or other such details presented for completeness), additional empirical results, or minor enhancements or variants of the results presented in the prior work.
  • The paper has not been presented at, and is not under consideration for, journal-first programs of other conferences.
  • The paper should not exclusively report a secondary study, e.g., systematic reviews, mapping studies, surveys.

How to Submit

The authors of a paper that respects the criteria above are invited to submit a (maximum) two-page presentation proposal consisting of the paper’s title, the paper’s authors, an extended abstract, and a pointer to the original journal paper at the journal’s Web site. If the journal paper is related to or builds on a previously published work (such as, a tool demo or a poster), then the proposal must clearly and explicitly justify why the paper should be considered a journal first paper.

Submission site: https://icse2021-jf.hotcrp.com/

All submissions must conform to the IEEE formatting instructions IEEE Conference Proceedings Formatting Guidelines (title in 24pt font and full text in 10pt type. LaTeX users must use \documentclass[10pt,conference]{IEEEtran} without including the compsoc or compsocconf options).

Evaluation and selection

Authors will be invited to present their paper at ICSE 2021 after a check that the paper satisfies the above listed criteria. As the papers have already been reviewed and accepted by the journals, they will not be reviewed again for technical content. In case that an exceptionally high number of submissions is received, not all papers will be selected. Priority will be given to the papers that:

  • Increase opportunities for authors to attend ICSE, who might not otherwise attend. In other words, priority will be given to papers with authors that have no (or fewer) papers accepted at the other ICSE tracks.
  • Best fit the technical program, offering a balance across the conference topics.

If there is further need to select from papers with the same priority, then they will be randomly selected. However, we will do our best to avoid this situation.

Important Dates

  • Journal First Submissions Deadline: 12 January 2021
  • Journal First Acceptance Notification: 10 February 2021
  • Submissions close at 23:59 AoE (Anywhere on Earth, UTC-12)

Conference Attendance Expectation

If a submission is accepted for the journal-first program, at least one author of the associated journal paper must register for, attend the full 3-day technical conference, and present the paper. The presentation is expected to be delivered in person, unless this is impossible due to travel limitations (related to, e.g., health, visa, or COVID-19 prevention). Presentation A journal-first presentation will be scheduled in a session with topically-related Technical Track, NIER, SEIP, and/or SEIS papers. Journal-first presentations will be allocated 15-20 minutes, depending on the number of papers included in the program, ideally, the same time as the technical papers. The journal-first manuscripts are published through the journals and will not be part of the ICSE proceedings. The journal-first papers will be listed in the conference program.

Journal-First Co-chairs

  • Lionel Briand, University of Ottawa, Canada
  • Robert Feldt, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

CONSENT AND RELEASE

As Journal First papers do not appear in the ICSE proceedings, but authors will provide a talk in the conference, it is required, according to IEEE policies, that all speakers of virtual events must sign an IEEE Consent Form. So please fill in and sign the release consent available here: https://conf.researchr.org/getImage/icse-2021/orig/ICSE21_Consent+and+Release-1.pdf and upload it on to this Dropbox folder no later than March 30, 2021: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gtii797rx6svd5q/AACBcq6UfDWAMJJ0NwuFeLEOa?dl=0. The Dropbox password is: icsejf21, and you should name your filled in and signed file: paperN.pdf, where N is your HotCRP paper ID number.

ABOUT OPEN POLICIES

As you know, ICSE 2021 has embraced open science practices towards higher transparency of the scientific process and availability of research artifacts. With ICSE 2021 going virtual, more than ever we need to ensure access to such a widely distributed audience.

Your papers, in particular, are not part of the proceedings and are published (or are in-press) with three different publishers. This means that ICSE attendees have to rely on their devices to access the publication digital library. Sometimes this is made easy by institutions, but oftentimes and, especially in times of COVID-19, this is not. We want to change this, but we need your help.

We kindly ask you to self-archive a preprint of your journal article. A preprint is the version of a paper completely prepared by the authors without external editing by the publisher. That is, the usual PDF that you produce when you write your paper. Authors have the right to self-archive these preprints, e.g. on their institutional repository. Please note that it must be your own copy of the manuscript and self-archiving the PDF as edited by the publisher is not allowed.

Please note that each publisher has different conditions and steps to be performed, to allow you to self-archive on arXiv. These are detailed in the copyright transfer agreement(s) you signed, but are summarized for your convenience by the Sherpa Romeo tool as follows:

Once you have self-archived a preprint of your journal article, please enter its stable identifier link (arXiv link, DOI, handle.net and whatnot) following the instructions for uploading preprints detailed here: https://conf.researchr.org/attending/icse-2021/authors

If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact the open science chair Daniel Graziotin at daniel.graziotin@iste.uni-stuttgart.de.

ABOUT PRESENTATION AND TIMING

  • ICSE main conference will be held from Tuesday May 25 to Friday May 28, 2021.
  • You presentation will be 10 minutes long. The presentation will be recorded, not live (you are required to provide a 10 minutes video presentation).
  • Q&A will last for 10 minutes. Q&A will be live.
  • After every session there will be breakout rooms for every paper to continue discussion with interested attendees.
  • Program will have a uniform daily schedule of 12 hours (10:00-22:00 CEST) and will be mirrored in the other 12 hours. Authors are encouraged to be present in the Q&A of the live/main conference(10:00-22:00 CEST).

ABOUT REQUIRED INFORMATION TO UPLOAD

  • You are required to provide a compulsory 10 minutes video, shown as part of the conference program.
  • Based on the Open Science Initiative of ICSE 2021, you are required to self-archive a preprint of your paper. So, you will be required to provide us the link that will appear in ICSE 2021 website (as described above). Please upload the link to your preprint no later than March 30, 2021.
  • Before long you will receive information about where and when to upload your 10 minutes video presentation. So, please, start to prepare your digital presentation at your earliest convenience. Here: https://conf.researchr.org/attending/icse-2021/authors you can find useful tips on recording practices and more.
