Enabling Scalable Proactive Workspaces With Environment-Wide Context
Developers coordinate multiple independent tools while evolving modern systems. Unfortunately, these independent tools force the manual and laborious orchestration of these tools. Prior work has demonstrated that tools can be integrated through shared context; this reduces coordination, navigation, and configuration burdens for developers, leading to higher productivity. These coordinated tools enable the workspace to be proactive by giving independent tools the ability to tailor their behaviour for developers. Unfortunately, due to the diversity of projects and tasks developers work on, one unified tool will never be able to solve this unnecessary work for all developers. At the same time, new tools will continue to be created to help developers manage growing software complexity. Reflecting on the scalability challenges of past integration approaches, this paper introduces a vision for Proactive Workspaces which are able to provide a mechanism for tools to publish and subscribe to context in a scalable way. This enables tools to continuously adapt to the developer as they work, decreasing the friction associated with traditional siloed workspaces, and increasing developer productivity.
