Gamification is defined as “the use of game design elements in non-game contexts”, and has been applied frequently in activities related to the whole software engineering pipeline. Gamified practices, as categorized by several frameworks existing in the literature such as Octalysis or GAMEX, have been successfully applied to software testing activities, especially because of their capability in increasing the involved practitioners’ motivation and engagement. This keynote describes the outcomes of a five-years long research project, entitled “EndGame”, that started as an exploration of the state of the practice of gamification in End2End testing and continued with the creation and empirical evaluation of several gamified tools for both mobile and web application GUI testing. The implications for practitioners and for students - when gamification is applied to educational contexts - are discussed. Finally, the lessons learned in the first three editions of the Gamify workshop are discussed, with a final focus on the use of emerging GenAI technologies in the field of gamified testing.

Dr. Riccardo Coppola received the M.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering and the PhD in Control and Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, where he is currently working as a research assistant with time contract. His research interests include automated GUI testing for web and mobile applications, and the evaluation of non-functional properties of software projects. Riccardo Coppola has been web chair for the 11th Workshop on Automated Testing (A-Test 2020), proceedings chair for the 21st International conference on Product-Focused Software Process Improvement (PROFES 2020) and short paper chair for the 22nd International conference on Product-Focused Software Process Improvement (PROFES 2021).
