The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) is a volunteer organization aiming to qualify practitioners in software testing and quality assurance. It issues a certification scheme with many certification products for this subject matter. These certification products are based on the current state of practice, international, and consist of a syllabus and certification exam question sets. We recently revised and updated the Advanced Level Test Analyst Syllabus which focuses on black-box test techniques. In this presentation, we share our experience with developing the new syllabus. First, we indicate how we determined the scope. The selected techniques had to be generally applicable and provide evidence of their effectiveness. We provide an overview of the test techniques selected, classify them, and mention the sources of information we could use. They include domain testing, random testing, combinatorial testing, state transition testing, CRUD testing, decision table testing, and metamorphic testing. Next, we indicate the level of cognitive knowledge we require for each technique based on Bloom’s taxonomy. We also mention how we selected the references to books, articles and websites. Finally, we share our experience how the new certification was received by our stakeholders - the training material authors, trainers, and exam providers. In the summary, we explain our tradeoff between the highest possible professionalism of software testers and the acceptance of our training in the industry.
