MODELS 2020
Sun 18 - Fri 23 October 2020 Montreal, Canada

The conference will take place at the MIL Campus of the University of Montreal. This brand new facility opened its doors to students, faculty, and staff in September 2019. This historic site used to be a marshaling yard for trains in the early 1910.

Getting there

The best way to get to the MIL Campus is by metro. It is located equidistantly from the stations Outremont and Acadie on the blue line. You can also use the bus lines 160 (stop Outremont / Van Horne), 179 (stop Beaumont/Acadie), and 161 (stop Outremont / Van Horne).

Accommodation

Montreal is home to thousands of hotels, hostels, and airbnbs with over 25,000 rooms. Since the MIL Campus is at the heart of the city around local neighborhoods, the closest hotels are located 3.5 km away. We recommend to either rent the many available rooms in the neighborhood on airbnb or to stay at one of the hundred hotels down-town.

Around the MIL Campus

The MIL Campus is located at the cross-roads of four neighborhoods: Outremont to the south, Town of Mount-Royal (a.k.a. TMR) to the west, Parc Extension (a.k.a. Parc Ex) to the north, and Little Italy to the east.

TMR is known as the garden city of the island. It is mostly a residential neighborhood housing over 30 small parks within its 7.5 km2. It is one of the most expensive neighborhoods to live in Montreal.

Outremont is known as the other mount being on the north slope of the Mount Royal. The happening streets to shop and eat are few, but fabulous: Van Horne (5 min walk from MIL), Bernard (12 min), and Laurier (25 min). It is also the location of some of the most luxurious real-estate in the city. The higher up the hill you go, the more luxurious the homes.

Parc Ex is one of Montreal’s most multicultural neighborhoods. A refuge for new immigrants from all over the world, it is teeming with restaurants and businesses of Southeast Asian, African, Greek, Vietnamese, Ecuadorian, Jewish and Eastern European descent. You can find some of the best Indian restaurants just 5min walk from the MIL.

Little Italy is synonym to green parks, pizza, espresso, and architectural gems that pepper the streets with a strong community vibe. It is mostly known by locals for its eateries. In particular, you can find the Jean-Talon Market where everything is locally produced. On the way to the heart of Little Italy by foot, you will cross a once a largely industrial offshoot of Little Italy: Mile Ex. This neighborhood only really came into its own as a distinct area once hipsters started building their homes among the factories and auto body shops there. In Mile Ex, you can find the recent Institute for data valorization IVADO, the Quebec AI institute MILA, and the world-class multimedia studio Moment Factory.
