From 50 Slides to 5,000 bricks : Experiencing scaled agile ways of working at Lufthansa Group Digital Hangar with Lego
The aim of the Lufthansa Group Digital Hangar is to create the world’s best travel experience - physical, human and digital - for the major airlines in the Lufthansa Group. To achieve this, we are driving agile transformation: we want to be pioneers in the development of groundbreaking digital solutions for the aviation industry.
In 2022, the Digital Hangar was founded as a digital unit to develop digital products along the customer journey in agile product teams. Since then, the Hangar has become the digital powerhouse of the Lufthansa Group. During that time the Ecosystem grew from several hundred people to more than 1,200. Today, we have 11 ARTs in 7 VS Streams with more than 100 Product and Platform Teams spread across seven main locations with people coming from more than 20 different companies.
This also meant changing the way of working from operating in departments to a cross functional, cross company and cross location ecosystem with value streams and platforms where business and tech are working closely together. Traditional onboarding methods often fall short in engaging new hires and ensuring they retain critical information. Long presentations and dense manuals can overwhelm new employees, leading to lower retention rates and slower productivity. Therefore, we revised our onboarding of the way of working continuously from presentation with short interactive games and roleplays to a full day Lego Simulation with Value Streams and OKRs identification and mapping, following Guardrails, writing Benefit Hypothesis, using PI Plannings and fulfilling different roles. In addition, we implemented a train-the-trainer approach to increase the amount of facilitators and are offering agile safaris to not only onboard our employees but offer it to a wider audience.
