ECSA 2026
Mon 7 - Fri 11 September 2026 Bolzano, Italy

ECSA 2026 will feature four invited talks: two keynotes addressing timely questions for software architecture, AI, and AI governance, and two industrial talks during Tech Talks South Tyrol on Tuesday evening.

Speaker Keynote details
Enrico Zimuel From Layers to Agents: Rethinking Software Architecture for the AI Era

Speaker: Enrico Zimuel, Elastic
When: Wed 9 Sep 2026, 09:30-10:30
Where: D1.03, D wing, lecture room 3 at the first floor

Software architecture has evolved from managing hardware constraints and system structure to enabling scalability, resilience, continuous delivery, and organizational alignment. This keynote traces that evolution from early systems through client-server, object-oriented design, SOA, cloud, microservices, and DevOps, then explores how AI is reshaping the field. Large language models, AI assistants, RAG, and autonomous agents introduce new possibilities, but also new challenges around trust, governance, explainability, cost, security, and human oversight. The future architectures will not only execute predefined logic; they will increasingly learn, reason, and act. As a result, the architect’s role expands from designing reliable systems to designing trustworthy human-AI ecosystems.

Bio: Enrico Zimuel is a Principal Software Engineer at Elastic, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Turin, and teaches Agentic AI and RAG Architectures at Roma Tre University. He is a TEDx and international conference speaker and has authored several computer science books.
Gabriele Mazzini The EU AI Act from ambition to reality

Speaker: Gabriele Mazzini, Architect and lead author EU AI Act, MIT fellow
When: Thu 10 Sep 2026, 09:30-10:30
Where: D1.03, D wing, lecture room 3 at the first floor

The talk will offer a firsthand account of the origin and evolution of EU AI Act from the unique perspective of its lead drafter. The legal text, finalized two years ago, has continued to be the subject of intense debates and legislative interventions until recently, with EU institutions striving to find a balance between regulation and innovation. The presentation will focus on key concepts of the law, the process and important milestones and aims to stimulate a debate with the audience.

Bio: Gabriele Mazzini is a leading expert in AI governance and regulation. As Team Leader at the European Commission until July 2024, he led the drafting of the Commission proposal for the EU AI Act and advised throughout the legislative negotiations. He is currently a fellow at the MIT Connection Science initiative.
Peter Gfader Code Was Never the Problem - How AI Sorts Your Team's Practices

Speaker: Peter Gfader, Beyond Agility GmbH
When: Tue 8 Sep 2026, 18:10-18:50
Where: B1.0.14 (Aula Magna)

Part of Tech Talks South Tyrol on Tuesday evening.

This interactive industrial talk explores how AI makes writing code cheaper while increasing the value of engineering practices that build and preserve a shared understanding of a system. It connects practical team concerns—correct software, controlled costs, and experienced developers—with ideas including Jevons' Paradox and Peter Naur's “Programming as Theory Building.”

Bio: Peter Gfader is a software engineer and agile coach who helps organizations combine technical excellence with effective agile practices. He is active in the software craftsmanship community and regularly contributes to meetups and conferences in the DACH region.
Philip Riecks Top 5 Spring Boot Testing Mistakes Developers Trap Into

Speaker: Philip Riecks, PragmaTech
When: Tue 8 Sep 2026, 18:50-19:30
Where: B1.0.14 (Aula Magna)

Part of Tech Talks South Tyrol on Tuesday evening.

This talk examines five common Spring Boot testing mistakes that undermine otherwise passing test suites. Through code examples and live debugging, it covers misleading coverage, slow builds, transaction rollback confusion, context pollution, incorrect use of @SpringBootTest, choosing appropriate test slices, and reusing the application context for faster feedback.

Bio: Philip Riecks helps developers ship software more frequently and confidently through technical content and hands-on consulting. He has spoken at Spring I/O, SpringOne, and Devoxx Belgium, and runs a Spring Boot testing blog and academy with more than 10,000 members.
