Keynote: Teaching Software Testing with Gamification in Naples
A common problem in software testing teaching is the negative perception that students sometimes have of this topic, since they are generally more engaged in ‘constructive’ activities, such as software design and implementation. In my experience as a Software Testing teacher in the academy, I observed that it is not always easy to convince students of the theoretical and practical importance of testing, squeezed between more appealing and trendy subjects. A good solution is to alternate theoretical teachings and practical activities to be carried out during the course. These practical activities can be more engaging when they are organized in a gamification framework, bringing real problems to a playful context. Several approaches for teaching testing topics by gamification have recently experimented at the University of Naples in the context of the European project called ENACTEST, providing positive feedback from students in terms of engagement and acquired competencies.
