The PyPy project is a very fast Python reimplementation written in (a subset of) Python. It’s made fast by a retargettable tracing JIT compiler, which has also been used for implementing a number of other programming languages. The project got started 15 years ago, so in this talk I’ll look back at the project history and examine some of the social and technical lessons we learned during that time.
