The under-representation of women in information and communication technology (ICT) is a persistent issue that has recently received much attention from academia, policymakers, and the public. The variety of societal and formative experiences excluding girls and women from science and technology fields is increasingly recognized as a barrier not only to women but to society, as contributions from diverse sources are essential to progress in these life-saving areas. Today’s challenges also offer opportunities to stimulate innovative solutions and improve educational approaches to be more gender-sensitive and proactively inclusive. Although progress has been made in promoting gender equality and diversity in various technological fields, data still show pernicious gender imbalances, specifically in the ICT sector. This study aims to examine and assess gender disparities in the ICT sector across Europe and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also highlights recent initiatives in the country towards promoting gender equality and empowering women. In particular, as an example of the role higher education institutions can play in realizing SDGs, the study focuses on the different approaches involving both internal and external community actors taken by the International University of Sarajevo, a university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to achieve gender equality.
