GE@ICSE: Fifth Workshop on Gender Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in Software Engineering

The software engineering community is realizing that diversity plays a key role in the creation of a successful and competitive context for software development and research. Such diversity refers to the combination of many aspects such as gender, culture, religion, and geographical distribution. The purpose of this workshop, which is at its fifth edition, is to bring together software engineering researchers and external experts to discuss the interplay of software engineering with gender diversity and other diversity aspects. The overall goal of the workshop is to improve the state of gender equality and in general increase inclusion and diversity principles in the software engineering community.

Goals of the workshop

As anticipated goals and outcomes of the workshop, we plan to:

  • Be able to obtain a deeper understanding of gender issues’ magnitude in software engineering, including the role of differences, as well as of difficulties and opportunities related to gender equality.
  • Identify issues that need further empirical analysis and investigation.
  • Increase the awareness of practitioners, researchers, and educators on the different degrees of the presence of women in %ICT software engineering as well as on the difficulties they face in taking leading positions.
  • Focus on the identification of other issues related to diversity (e.g., religion, cultural traditions) that may have emerged in the community and that may call for attention.
  • Build a community of people interested in the subject and willing to identify problems, define, and, possibly, actuate long-term solutions.
  • Define a research roadmap of open issues to point out to other researchers which research needs exist.
