ICSE 2024
Fri 12 - Sun 21 April 2024 Lisbon, Portugal

The presentation investigates pragmatic solutions, and innovative pathways, addressing the urgent need to disrupt the traditional pathways that have led to the persistent underrepresentation of women in technology fields. At the centre of our discourse is the initiative “RockStartIT: Ignite Curiosity. Fuel Futures.”, a pathbreaking programme that aims to break down the barriers that prevent women from engaging with IT. By integrating interdisciplinary education with hands-on, problem-solving projects that address real-world challenges, RockStartIT goes beyond traditional learning pathways. It provides a comprehensive and authentic learning experience that equips female students not only with technology skills but also with a passion for innovation and a commitment to improving society. This presentation will document the journey of the RockStartIT programme, highlighting the defining moments, the challenges overcome and the innovative strategies that have fueled its impact. We will look at the encouraging narratives of students who have redefined their relationship with technology through their engagement in the programme - moving from passive observers to active participants in learning. The discourse aims to initiate a broader discussion on scalable and adaptable strategies that can promote gender diversity within the tech ecosystem. “From Assumptions to Action” is not only a call to rethink our approaches to education but also a call to collective action to reshape the pathways that lead women into technology. By forging new paths and harnessing the untapped potential of women in technology, we can unleash a future that thrives on the full spectrum of human creativity and innovation.
