Collaboration, Team driven Adaptation and Happiness: Single Team FAST in a Scrum Cadence under SAFe
FAST (Fluid Adaptive Scaling Technology) is still a somewhat new approach to working Adaptive, Collaborative and Agile. Since my XP2023 Experience report, more Collectives have emerged (and some also disappeared). More Conference talks have been seen. Also from people, around teams, that are not necessarily active within the FAST community slack. Some Universities and other educational institutes are adding FAST as part of their Agile Ways of working Courses.
So FAST has started to spread.
Still not enough. Still not fast enough (pun intended) – to my liking.
Since my XP2023 Experience report, I’ve been many times asked questions like: - Is it possible to get started with just one Team - How can we replace our current (Scrum) way of working - What about infrastructure teams – how does that work - How do we mix Daily Support, Project deliveries and Urgent Requests from other teams (ad projects)? - We are running SAFe – is it possible to implement FAST in such a setting
My answer has to those, and other FAST related questions: “Yes! And it’s easy…” …often next response was a followup questions like: “Could you point us in the direction of teams that have experience with it?” “Have YOU done it?”
The sad answer was… “Not yet….”
During spring and summer of 2024 I found a customer, I could help. So NOW I have the experience. And still being alive, to tell the story….
I imagine the experience report could contain elements like 1. Tangible guidance on how I got the team started. From zero to FAST 2. Tangible Insight into how FAST Meeting was conducted daily 3. What to be aware of when running FAST in a Scrum Cadence, under SAFe 3 months PI period. 4. How dealing with the characteristics of an infrastructure team (compared to a software development team) in FAST 5. What was hard 6. What we didn’t solve or succeed with 7. With my knowledge now – what advice would I give to others that want to get going with FAST…
My thoughts are that the experience report removes the type of hesitation getting started with FAST – that I often meet – when sharing it at Conferences, Agile Coach Camps, User groups and around my network. I would hope that this experience report can show and inspire for a tangible way of doing Agile at a higher level of Collaboration, Team driven Adaptation, self-organization, self-selection and self-managing work.
And show that Whole Team Collaboration is possible. And everyone – with the will - is capable of doing it.
By just getting started with doing FAST under their current Agile Cadence.
