Identifying Project Management Skills in Industry-Driven Capstone Projects
Capstone projects play a vital role in software engineering education, offering students practical experience in addressing real-world challenges while bridging the gap between academia and industry. These projects enable students to develop essential project management skills, including time management, project planning, decision-making, and risk management, which are crucial for navigating the complexities of modern software development. This study explores the development of project management skills among university students participating in software engineering capstone projects. Through a thematic analysis of the learning artifacts provided by student groups, the study identifies the key skills developed during these projects. The qualitative analysis, combining inductive and deductive approaches, reveals how students demonstrated planning, goal setting, and adaptability in response to challenges. While the findings highlight the effectiveness of capstone projects in fostering these competencies, they also identify areas where skill development can be further enhanced. These insights underscore the value of capstone projects in preparing students for the demands of professional software engineering.
